Rising & Setting Sun -- Istros, Thrace, 400 - 350 B.C.

Note the archaic date. The obverse type has been variously interpreted as representing the Dioscuri, the rising and setting sun, and the two branches of the river Danube, depending upon which culture uses the image, Greek or Celtic. REF: David Sear.

Silver stater, SNG Cop 196, SGCV I 1669, VF, 5.454g, 17.4mm, Istros mint, 400 - 350 B.C.; obverse facing male heads, right inverted; reverse "ISTRIH", sea-eagle grasping a dolphin with talons, "D" in between, XAP monogram below. RARE in this condition.
